I Think We’re Alone Now Cocktail
Or “Grenadine Daiquiri”
A post holiday twist on that
unjustly maligned and bastardized classic cocktail, The Daiquiri.
2.0 dark rum
1.0 fresh grenadine syrup
1.0 fresh lime juice
.5 Maraschino liquor
Shake hard with a lot of
ice. Rest a moment. Warm up your fingers. Shake hard again.
A handy recipe when after the holiday madness, you
have a left over pomegranate and some limes that are on the verge
of use ‘em or lose ‘em. I make my grenadine syrup with equal parts pomegranate
juice, sugar, and water. When you crush the pomegranate arils, and I do it in a
food mill, do it gently so that you don’t crush the bitter white seed of the
aril.
And if you don’t have any
pomegranates in the house, even though this is peak season, use simple
syrup and you’ll have a classic, but tart, daiquiri. And those places in New Orleans that sell ‘daiquiri’ slushs
in gallon milk containers, well, they should just hang their heads in
collective shame.
