Evolution of a Cocktail

we invented the Pomeranian cocktail. So named because our friend Deb was infatuated with the idea of getting a Pomeranian puppy and because the drink featured pomegranate juice. Deb realized her folly, got another cat or three, but we’re still in love with grenadine. That’s what you call fresh pomegranate juice mixed with simple syrup: grenadine.

Pomeranian Once upon a Christmas night, we invented the Pomeranian cocktail. Pomegranate tree

In a divine moment of serendipity, the pomegranate tree in Montone is full of ripe fruit AND amazingly, unexpectedly I found limes at the store. This is the second time this year that  I’ve found limes in Umbria, maybe there is a trend afoot?
I’ve simplified the pomegranate juice extraction process by using a food mill so that’s no longer the messy issue it once was.

One thing led to another, and a Pomeranian was just what we needed to make the night perfect.

Pomeranian Grenadine syrup
2 oz gin
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz St. Germaine
1/2 freshly made grenadine syrup

Shake.  Rest. Shake again and serve.

Where’s the evolution? What if it were made with an egg white? Would that froth tie the drink together? It’s Friday night…give it a try…let us know!

Nor any of the other problems they claimed it would cure.

BTW, try just mixing the actual pomegranate juice with sugar 50/50. Shake like the devil till all the sugar is dissolved. Or heat till it is. Add 1 T of neutral spirits (gasp = vodka). Refrigerate. Real grenadine.

    I mix a 50/50 simple syrup
with the freshly squeezed pomegranate juice..havent seen a recipe
that called or alcohol. Maybe its a preservative?

That’s one way! But try just making the “simple” by subbing pom juice for the water – saves a step and makes for a more concentrated grenadine. And yes, the booze acts as a preservative…should last a few weeks in the fridge. Of course, if you’re only making a cup or so at a time, it’s not necessary.

And then maybe a Jack Rose!

    mmmm….Jack Rose…that
    sounds tasty!
These pomegranates were REALLY sour, we added sugar until it was
    palatable…and I like sour!
