The Civitella Ranieri castle is one of the best preserved castles in Umbria. It dates back to the 16th century, although there are records of a church on the site dating back to 1053.

It is located just outside the town of Umbertide. This part of Umbria is rural with steep rolling hills and farmland. Agriculture plays a major role in the economy of the area.
Once a major tobacco growing area, it has slowly evolved into a more diversified farming area, with many vineyards dotting the area.
Nearby Montone is one of the most charming hilltop villages in Italy and is a member of the Borghi Piu' Belli group of designated villages.
