Tri-Tip Steak in NYC

Tri Tip in NYC Tracking down the elusive Tri-Tip steak in NYC has not been easy. It’s just not an east coast cut. We could learn a thing or two from our west coast friends. Amazing, but true.

One NYC butcher required that I buy an entire crate. I like steak, but not a crate-worth.  The butcher shop over at Chelsea Market, Dickson’s Farmstand Meats, was interesting. I happened to walk in just as they were breaking down a side of beef and the butcher chopped one off for me. Timing is everything, but lurking outside the butcher’s waiting for the right moment seems excessive. Even for me. Timing a Tri Tip

Sometimes you discover the solution has been there all along: Ottomanelli’s in the West Village. They’ve been around for awhile: 110 years. Which is pretty impressive and it means they know a thing or two about meat. Eureka:  they have tri-tip, all the time, for $7.99 lb.

Seared, herbed and oiled. A great cut of meat and most satisfying meal.
